Parents’ Evening in UK Schools: What I Wish I Had Known as a Parent

Image
I was more nervous about meeting my children’s teachers than I ever remember being about meeting my own. Perhaps it was because they were my children’s teachers. I wanted to make a good impression. I worried that I might ask the wrong question or misunderstand something. And, something I can smile about now, I even wondered what I was supposed to wear. Should I dress smartly? Was Parents’ Evening a formal school occasion? Would everyone else somehow know exactly what to do except me? Of course, when I arrived, parents were simply parents.   One of the most confusing moments after moving to England can be getting ill for the first time. If you come from a country where you can simply visit a nearby hospital or specialist when you are unwell, the NHS system may feel unfamiliar. Should you contact a GP? Go to A&E? Call NHS 111? What Is the NHS and What Does a GP Do? The NHS, or National Health Service, is the UK's publicly funded healthcare system. This guide focuses...

You may read phrases such as: “A pleasure to teach.” “Has made good progress.” “Contributes enthusiastically in lessons.” “Approaches learning with a positive attitude.” As a parent, of course these are lovely things to read. And they matter. A child who enjoys learning, participates in lessons, works well with others and has a positive relationship with teachers has strengths worth recognising. But there was always another question I wanted my children’s reports to answer: What does my child need help with next? That question changed the way I read school reports. A UK School Report Is Not Just a Score She...
